TREBINJE, MARCH 9 /SRNA/ – The Tvrdoš Monastery-produced olive oil has won three gold medals at a world competition in New York.
Hieromonk Porfirije of Tvrdoš Monastery told SRNA that the awarded oils were the single-variety oil "Halkidiki," the blend "Monastik" and the "Kalamata" oil.
"The soil and climate of the olive groves are well suited to the cultivars, so the oil obtained contains more than 400 milligrams of polyphenols per liter. If the value exceeds 400, it is not only food but also medicine," said Hieromonk Porfirije.
According to him, the olives are hand-picked and quickly pressed. In this way, a green oil is obtained with pronounced fruitiness and a high content of polyphenols.
He noted that Tvrdoš Monastery’s olive oil won one gold medal last year, but three gold medals this year.
"This is yet another confirmation of our dedication to olives and the production of extra virgin olive oils," said Hieromonk Porfirije.
He added that Tvrdoš Monastery currently has 1,700 trees, including local Herzegovinian cultivars, as well as Greek and Italian varieties.
