TREBINJE, DECEMBER 6 /SRNA/ – A memorial service was held today in Trebinje for the fallen members of the Republika Srpska Ministry of Interior, marking 33 years since the founding of the Third Unit of the Special Police Brigade.
It was emphasized that this is one of the significant dates in the history of the people of Herzegovina and that it is important to pass this memory on to younger generations.
Dragan Radanović, wartime deputy commander of the Third Unit, told the press that on this date Colonel Miroslav Duka conducted the first line-up of the Third Unit of the Special Police Brigade.
“We should be an example for younger generations. I would like to see more young people at our gatherings, for schools to make use of our presence, bring students, talk to us, ask whatever interests them, because children have many questions about why and how the war began,” Radanović said, adding that he is proud of everything the Third Unit accomplished.
Dejan Bodiroga, the head of the Veterans Association of the Special Police Brigade’s Third Unit, says it is very important for the memory to be passed down to younger generations.
He believes that it would be valuable for institutions to take on this task, and that they can use veterans to convey authentic stories.
Zdravko Butulija, the speaker of the Trebinje City Assembly, highlighted the importance of this date for Republika Srpska and Herzegovina.
“The City of Trebinje supports the veteran population, all structures and associations, through a series of programmes. The Republika Srpska Police is today the foundation of our defence,” Butulija said.
As part of the ceremony, a documentary film by Ljubiša Milutinović about General Goran Sarić - the youngest police general of Srpska - was screened today at the Cultural Centre, and earlier a shooting competition was held.
During the Defensive - Patriotic War, 12 members of the Third Unit of the Special Police Brigade were killed.
