BANJA LUKA, OCTOBER 22 /SRNA/ – Former Speaker of the Republika Srpska National Assembly Nedeljko Čubrilović, speaking ahead of the upcoming marking of the 35th anniversary of the establishment of the Republika Srpska parliament, emphasized that the parliament is a pillar of democratic processes in this region.

Čubrilović told SRNA that the establishment of the National Assembly marked the beginning of parliamentary life and everything that Republika Srpska represents, including the definition of its powers, goals and needs.

"Over these 35 years of parliamentary work, I believe that parliamentary thinking has matured, as has the people of Republika Srpska, who have worked to develop democratic processes in this region," Čubrilović said.

He recalled that, over the years, the National Assembly had almost always operated under pressure when making decisions.

"We had to go through various turbulent periods, but I hope that the parliament of Republika Srpska will keep upholding its statehood and demonstrate that it is maturing into a legislative body capable of defending decisions that are important for the Republic and for the survival of the Serbs and Republika Srpska in this region," Čubrilović said, expressing hope that the National Assembly would celebrate its 50th anniversary.

The National Assembly of Republika Srpska, the highest constitutional and legislative body within the governing structure of Republika Srpska and the central institution of its parliamentary system, was established on October 24, 1991, as the Assembly of the Serb People in BiH.

The decision was adopted by deputies elected in the autumn 1990 elections.

On the same day, at the inaugural session of the Assembly of the Serb People in BiH, several other acts were adopted, including two of particular political significance: the Decision on the Serb People Remaining in the Common State of Yugoslavia and the Decision on Calling and Conducting a Plebiscite of the Serb People in BiH.

On January 9, 1992, deputies of the National Assembly of Republika Srpska adopted the Declaration proclaiming the Republic of the Serb People of BiH. This date is celebrated as Republika Srpska Day.

On February 28, 1992, the National Assembly adopted the Constitution of Republika Srpska and the Constitutional Law for its Implementation, formally establishing the legal and constitutional status of the Serb people as a state-forming entity.
