BRATUNAC, JULY 18 /SRNA/ - The 33rd anniversary of the killing of eight civilians in the village of Gornji Magašići will be commemorated in that village, in the municipality of Bratunac, on Sunday, July 20.
On that afternoon in 1992, armed Muslim forces from neighboring villages and from Srebrenica raided this small, peaceful, and undefended Serb village, killing all the residents they found. They looted the village and burned down 20 houses along with all auxiliary buildings.
The crime committed in Gornji Magašići is among the most horrific in terms of brutality, and it underscores the intention of Muslim forces to destroy everything Serbian, as all the victims in this village were civilians, five of them from the Ilić family. A 17-year-old pregnant woman was the youngest among them.
Six women and two elderly men were killed in their homes, and the village was looted and set on fire.
The oldest victim was 85-year-old Blagoje Popović, and the youngest was 17-year-old pregnant woman Ljiljana Ilić.
At 10:30, a memorial service will be held at the monument in the village for the eight murdered civilians, candles will be lit for the repose of their souls, and flowers will be laid at the memorial site.
No one has been held accountable or prosecuted for this, or for any of the other mass crimes committed against Serbs in the Bratunac municipality.
