TREBINJE, JULY 25 /SRNA/ - The Jovan Dučić City Park in Trebinje is one of the most recognizable symbols of the city on the Trebišnjica River.
It covers an area of 28,000 square meters and is one of the largest, but also the most beautiful in Republika Srpska and BiH.
The City Park is located in the center of the southernmost city of Republika Srpska and is attractive to numerous tourists who visit this city not only because of its rich horticulture, which makes it one of the most well-groomed in Republika Srpska, but also because of its overall appearance.
The planting of trees in this area, almost a century ago, was started by the great Serbian poet Jovan Dučić, who wanted to give Trebinje a green oasis like the ones he had seen in European cities.
As far back as 1880, the Austro-Hungarians planned to build a park in Trebinje north of the walls of the Old Town and began planting the first seedlings, mainly conifers and other plants.
Due to the rapid development of the city, in 1890 they decided to create a large park, which was located approximately on the site of today's City Park.
Experts in planting seedlings suitable for this area were brought from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, and Dalmatia.
FOUNTAIN DECORATES CENTRAL PART OF THE PARK
Inspired by what he saw in Europe and the world, Dučić wanted Trebinje to have a fountain in the shape of Cupid. Today's fountain, located in the very center of the park, is a copy of the fountain that was built according to Dučić's idea and is one of the most beautiful decorations of this park.
This fountain was the first sign that Trebinje belonged to European civilization, because no city in BiH had a fountain at that time.
Directly in front of the entrance to the City Park is a monument to this great poet, which was erected after the last war.
In one of his wills, Dučić expressed his wish for a mausoleum to be built in this park where he would be buried, and the foundation stone was laid by the great Serbian poet Desanka Maksimović.
However, Dučić's wish from his third will was granted, and his remains are today on the Crkvina Hill above Trebinje.
PARK HAS GOT NEW GLOSS THROUGH RECONSTRUCTION
The fact that the people of Trebinje love and respect Dučić's legacy is also proven by the current appearance of the City Park, which, thanks to the City Administration that reconstructed it, has acquired a modern and recognizable shine, making it a place that both tourists and domestic visitors are eager to visit.
The reconstruction of the Jovan Dučić City Park included the complete replacement of the sidewalks on the existing pedestrian paths, as well as on those where they were not previously, and new plants were planted on all green surfaces, which gave this oasis of greenery a completely new shine and recognition.
In addition, video surveillance has been installed, consisting of a modern camera system to prevent possible damage to the park's furniture, as well as LED lighting. A digital irrigation system for green areas has also been installed, the first of its kind in the Trebinje area.
Thanks to a donation from the Government of the Republika Srpska, the park also received a new fountain, which in a very short time became a recognizable detail in the city, and three new playgrounds were built, which made the park a desirable place for the youngest Trebinje residents.
In the process of reconstructing the park, new communal furniture, benches and trash bins were installed, and the installation of a wrought iron fence will begin on the eastern side of the City Park, where a stone wall with flower alleys was previously built to separate the City Park from the city streets.
