BELGRADE, OCTOBER 28 /SRNA/ - A minor, believed to be from Šabac, attacked a Gendarmerie officer guarding the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade with two knives, shouting "Allahu Akbar".
The officer killed the attacker in self-defense and sustained minor injuries.
A red level terrorism threat alert has been declared, RTS reported.
Interior Minister Ivica Dačić confirmed that a terrorist attack was carried out in Belgrade at 12:15 a.m. last night on a Gendarmerie officer guarding the Israeli Embassy.
Dačić said the security services had been monitoring the attacker, who, according to current information, was known as a representative of Islamic State.
Following the attack, the terrorism threat level was raised to the highest level, and police presence was stepped up at key locations across Serbia.
"Given that a terrorist attack has taken place on our country's territory, I have decided to raise the terrorism threat level to the highest possible level - red," Dačić said.
He said this means tighter controls and a stronger police presence at locations of particular security importance, including infrastructure facilities and places where large numbers of people gather.
An investigation is under way.
