BELGRADE, OCTOBER 21 /SRNA/ – Miodrag Linta, president of the Association of Serbs from the Region /SSR/, said the massacre of civilians in Kragujevac 85 years ago had become a symbol of the suffering of the Serbian people under German occupation and a tragic reminder of the brutality of war and the policy of brutal reprisals against civilians.
Linta stressed that present and future generations had a duty to preserve the memory of the massacre and its victims so that such crimes would never happen again, anywhere.
He remionded that the execution of around 3,000 civilians in Kragujevac's Šumarice area on October 21, 1941, was one of the most horrific crimes committed by German occupation forces against the Serbian people during the Second World War.
"What is particularly harrowing is that around 300 students and teachers were among those killed, their lives brutally cut short while they were still dreaming of their future," Linta concluded.
