KONSTANTIN DANIL - ONE OF THE GREATEST SERBIAN PAINTERS OF THE 19TH CENTURY

BIJELJINA, MAY 12 /SRNA/ - Konstantin Danil /1798-1873/, one of the greatest Serbian painters of the 19th century, representative of Biedermeier expression in Serbian painting, was born on May 13, 1798.

In style and technique, close to the Viennese classicists, Danil made iconostasis - the most important of which are in the Church of the Assumption in Pančevo and in the diocesan church in Timisoara - as well as portraits, still life and compositions.

He achieved true mastery as a portraitist, displaying considerable artistic strength and nobility of colour, especially in the period of liberation from the restraints of stylization, when he modeled more freely and aimed for psychological analysis, which is particularly striking in the portraits "Pavle Kengelac" and "The Artist's Wife".

Danil used very gentle, so-called lean colours, but at the same time, he used three different methods.

He cannot be classified in any school because various Venetian, Dutch, Viennese-Biedermeier and pseudo-classical influences are visible in his work.
