XIONGAN, OCTOBER 25 /SRNA/ - The international community should strengthen multilateralism, reform global governance, and enhance the role of the United Nations, while ensuring greater participation by countries of the Global South in international decision-making, Wu Ken, president of the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs, said.
Speaking at a press conference marking the conclusion of the Global Governance Forum, Wu said the world was facing increasingly serious challenges in the areas of peace, security, development and international governance, and that joint efforts were needed to address growing instability and uncertainty.
He stressed that preserving multilateralism was the only sustainable way to address shortcomings in global governance, emphasizing that the United Nations played an irreplaceable central role in maintaining an international order based on international law.
According to Wu, the authority and effectiveness of the UN system needed to be strengthened, while developing countries should be given greater representation in the processes of drafting international rules, setting priorities, and making decisions.
Wu highlighted the importance of implementing the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, accelerating global economic growth and building equitable development partnerships, stressing the need to promote a sustainable, balanced and inclusive recovery of the global economy.
Speaking about climate change, he pointed to the need for stronger global cooperation, a transition to a green, low-carbon economy, and greater financial and technological support for developing countries.
Wu said it was essential to preserve the multilateral trading system centered on the World Trade Organization, while reforming it to address the challenges of digitalization, green development and countries’ differing development needs.
He particularly emphasized the importance of responsible governance of artificial intelligence, stressing that the UN should serve as the central platform for international cooperation in this field, with all countries participating on an equal footing and human control over the technology maintained.
Wu also stressed the need to safeguard security in outer space and cyberspace, counter technological monopolies and bridge the digital divide to prevent countries of the Global South from being further marginalized in technological development.
He emphasized that dialogue among civilizations, people-to-people exchanges and stronger mutual trust were important prerequisites for improving global governance, adding that agreements reached at international forums should be translated into concrete action and sustainable cooperation.
Wu welcomed China’s contribution to global governance reform and expressed readiness to work with the international community to implement the Global Governance Initiative, with the aim of building a fairer and more equitable international system and a community with a shared future for humanity.
The Global Governance Forum was held from October 23 to 25 in Xiongan, in China’s Hebei Province. A journalist from the Media System of Republika Srpska /SRNA/ also covered the forum.
