WILDFIRES RAVAGE AN AREA FIVE TIMES LARGER THAN LAST YEAR

MADRID, AUGUST 5 /SRNA - RIA Novosti/ - The land area burned by wildfires in Spain this year is five times larger than in the same period in 2025, the Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge announced.

According to Ministry data, the fires have affected 194,122 hectares of land, whereas 33,360 hectares burned in 2025, representing an almost fivefold increase.

Since the beginning of the year, 39 large wildfires have been recorded in Spain, compared to 12 during the same period last year, the Ministry adds.

"Fortunately, today we can send a moderately positive message. The wildfire situation in recent days has been favorable, and the blazes have been significantly contained," stated the Vice President of the Spanish Government, Sara Aagesen.

At the same time, Spanish authorities have urged citizens to exercise extra caution, especially during the solar eclipse on August 12, when large crowds are expected to gather across the country.
