WILDFIRES IN EVROS REGION AND ON PAROS ISLAND

ATHENS, JULY 28 /SRNA/ - Multiple fires have broken out in the Evros region and on the island of Paros in the Aegean Sea, with ground and air forces battling to contain the flames, Kathimerini reported.

Near the village of Lavara, close to the Turkish border, helicopters and 26 firefighters with seven fire engines are taking part in efforts to extinguish a fire that has affected agricultural land.

Three aircraft were deployed today to assist ground crews in fighting a fire in Kampi, on the tourist island of Paros in the Cyclades.

Residents of the settlements of Agios Charalambos, Kampi, Bougados and Aneratzia were ordered to evacuate to Aliki, in the south of the island. A similar appeal was issued to residents of Kamari.

Civil protection authorities warned that southern Crete, as well as the eastern islands of Lesbos, Chios, Samos, Ikaria and Psara, face a high risk of category-four wildfires tomorrow on a five-level scale.

Other areas, including the Athens region, the island of Evia, the northeastern Peloponnese, the Cyclades, and the Dodecanese islands, have been assessed as Category Three risk areas.

Temperatures in Greece hovered around 38 degrees Celsius today, with even warmer weather and strong northern winds over the Aegean Sea expected in the coming days.
