TRUMP SIGNING AGREEMENT TODAY WITH PRIME MINISTERS OF DENMARK AND GREENLAND

COPENHAGEN, SEPTEMBER 22 /SRNA-Reuters/ – US President Donald Trump will meet today in New York with the leaders of Greenland and Denmark to sign an agreement that will allow for a greater U.S. military presence in Greenland.

In addition to the existing Pituffik Space Base, the agreement is expected to allow the opening of two new military sites – Narsarsuaq, a former Cold War-era airbase whose population has dwindled to just a few dozen people, and Mestersvig, which is currently used by an elite Danish special forces unit.

The agreement is expected to put an end to the dispute over the strategically important island.

Trump will meet with the prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said that the agreement would place Arctic security under the collective oversight of NATO, rather than leaving it solely to Washington and Copenhagen.

Greenland, a former colony, now a semi-autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, is located between the Arctic and North America and possesses vast energy resources.

Trump's refusal to rule out the use of military or economic force to gain control of the island triggered a diplomatic crisis within NATO in January and prompted Denmark and the Greenlandic government to engage in intensive negotiations.
