WASHINGTON, AUGUST 10 /SRNA – RIA Novosti/ – US President Donald Trump has privately discussed the possibility of ending the conflict with Iran without reaching a nuclear agreement, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing US officials.
"Trump has been laying the groundwork for declaring victory in the war with Iran for weeks if Tehran fully reopens the Strait of Hormuz, and while has privately indicated to senior advisers that he would be willing to reach an agreement without a nuclear deal," the newspaper reported.
An unnamed White House official told the newspaper that the USA had achieved all of its military objectives regarding Iran.
"Trump is now focused on ensuring the unobstructed transport of energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, while retaining the option of using military force if Iran continues to attack ships," the official said.
US officials added that, in private conversations with senior advisers, the president said it was unlikely that Tehran would resume its nuclear activities while he remains in office, given that US forces destroyed three major nuclear facilities last year.
At recent meetings, Trump also emphasized his belief that the threat of US attacks on Iran would serve as a credible deterrent.
