LISBON, AUGUST 19 /SRNA - RIA Novosti/ - Portuguese President António José Seguro has signed the law banning the wearing of face-covering clothing in public places, including Islamic burqas and niqabs, his office said.
"The President of the Republic has promulgated the decree of the Assembly of the Republic establishing security and prevention rules concerning the identification of citizens applicable in public spaces," the statement said.
The fine for violating the ban will range between EUR 150 and 750, while repeat offenders will face a fine of between EUR 400 and 3,000.
Seguro justified his decision to sign the document on the grounds of the need for social integration, preventing gender-based discrimination and security considerations.
