BERLIN, MAY 13 /SRNA/ - The Alternative for Germany /AfD/ has reached 28 percent support according to a new YouGov poll, gaining a six-point lead over the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union /CDU/CSU/ bloc, which has fallen to 22 percent, its weakest result since 2021.
At the same time, public trust in the German government continues to decline. As many as 82 percent of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the governing coalition's performance, while only 15 percent positively assessed Chancellor Friedrich Merz, a drop of five percentage points compared to April.
The poll results show that 81 percent of citizens believe Merz is not performing well as chancellor, while support for the policy of refusing cooperation with the AfD is weakening among voters.
Political adviser to the AfD Filip Gašpar said the poll reflected major shifts on the German political scene.
According to him, the AfD's 28 percent marks its best result so far, while CDU/CSU is recording its weakest performance in nearly five years.
"Citizens clearly no longer trust the government, which is also confirmed by the fact that 82 percent are dissatisfied with the coalition's work, while Chancellor Friedrich Merz has very weak public support. More and more people are rejecting the policy of isolating the AfD, as they believe ignoring millions of voters cannot be a democratic solution", Gašpar said.
He added that citizens are tired of the same politics, which is why support for the AfD continues to grow.
