BIJELJINA, JUNE 9 /SRNA/ - Rainer Werner Fassbinder /1945–1982/, a great German and world film director, screenwriter, and actor, passed away on June 10, 1982.
Fassbinder was a pioneer of the New German Cinema and one of the most prolific directors ever, shooting up to four feature films a year.
Privately, he was both mild and brutal, gentle and cynical, ready to sacrifice and egocentric, but at work—a ruthless dictator who constantly dreamed of working in a commune.
Always in the same black leather jacket and jeans, Fassbinder looked more like a drunkard from a rural Bavarian tavern than a celebrated film director who dreamed of one day creating a European Hollywood in Germany.
He directed around thirty feature films and the famous television series "Berlin Alexanderplatz".
Despite their thematic diversity, his films are predominantly based on stories and motifs from West German everyday life, which they often portray in a harshly critical, even merciless way.
Among Fassbinder's most famous films are "The Marriage of Maria Braun", "Veronika Voss", "Berlin Alexanderplatz", and "Ali: Fear Eats the Soul".
