KINSHASA, OCTOBER 27 /SRNA/ – The number of confirmed Ebola cases during the current outbreak in Africa has exceeded 10,000, with nearly 5,000 deaths, the vast majority of which are confirmed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Congolese health authorities have announced.
According to official figures, 10,060 people have been infected and 4,887 have died since the virus was first detected in May in the Central African country, AFP reported.
Cases have also been detected in Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda, while the World Health Organisation has warned that Africa faces a “complex” task in containing the outbreak, which spans the eastern, western and central parts of the continent.
Although around 2,684 people have recovered from the virus in the Congo, the outbreak’s fatality rate is close to 50 percent, according to data from the Congolese National Institute of Public Health.
