OSLO, SEPTEMBER 12 /SRNA/ – The Norwegian Government has called on technology giant Meta to step up efforts to protect children and young people using its social media platforms in the country.

"Children's safety must come first. We expect technology giants to take responsibility for protecting children and young people on their platforms," Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store said.

Meta owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

In the letter, the Norwegian Government stressed the need for effective age-verification systems to prevent minors from accessing the platforms.

Norway plans to introduce a minimum age of 16 for social media use, with the aim of presenting legislation by the end of this year and bringing it into force next year.
