NEW YORK, SEPTEMBER 18 /SRNA/ – The future UN Secretary-General must not be under anyone’s influence and must be objective and impartial, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said.

He added that the individual must possess all the key qualities required of an international civil servant.

Speaking about the selection of the new Secretary-General, he noted that regardless of how many votes a candidate receives in the race, the outcome is ultimately determined by the recommendations of the Security Council - specifically, a majority of votes that includes all five permanent members during the so-called coloured ballot voting.

"Ideally, the Secretary-General should be someone who understands the role of the organisation’s chief administrative officer and who, in accordance with Article 100 of the UN Charter, possesses the highest level of competence, impartiality and other qualities expected of the position," Nebenzya said.

According to him, the person must not be "anyone’s man, including Russia’s".

"He must be objective and must serve all UN member states," Nebenzya said, TASS reported.
