MORE THAN 15 NEW ISLANDS IDENTIFIED

MOSCOW, SEPTEMBER 29 /SRNA-RIA Novosti/ - Russian researchers have discovered more than 15 islands of various sizes in the Arctic since 2015 as a result of global warming, said Andrei Leonov, a professor at the Admiral Makarov Maritime Academy Institute.

"At the same time, researchers have monitored the emergence of islands in recent years because satellite imagery makes it possible to track changes, and it can sometimes take more than a year to determine precisely that a new landform has appeared", Leonov said.

According to him, climate change is the main reason for the emergence of new islands, as global warming causes the fronts of glaciers to melt.

He added that advances in monitoring technology have made it possible to detect changes along coastlines.
