ISTANBUL, SEPTEMBER 12 /SRNA – RIA Novosti/ – More than 100 people have been arrested this summer in Turkiye on suspicion of committing crimes against foreign tourists, Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said.
"Over the three summer months, 323 suspects were detained in 16 provinces in connection with 164 incidents posing a threat to safe tourism. Of those detained, 106 were arrested, including 20 of the 71 suspects accused of fraud and attempting to extort money from tourists," Gurlek said.
Another 43 suspects were arrested on charges including threats, violence and robbery, while 40 were arrested for misappropriating tourists' property.
Gurlek said three more people were arrested on charges of discrimination, insulting religious and social values and violating privacy.
The justice minister said law enforcement agencies would continue working to ensure the safety of Turkish citizens and foreign tourists.
