MIROSHNIK: EU'S DOUBLE STANDARDS REGARDING ELECTIONS IN UKRAINE AND RUSSIA

MOSCOW, SEPTEMBER 28 /SRNA – RIA Novosti/ – Rodion Miroshnik, an ambassador at Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs responsible for war crimes by Kyiv, pointed to the EU’s double standards regarding elections in Russia and Ukraine.

"The last local elections in Ukraine itself were held almost six years ago, parliamentary elections seven years ago, and presidential elections seven and a half years ago. The EU did not threaten them with any sanctions because of this, nor did it see any threat to democracy or the rule of the people," Miroshnik said at the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council.

He said that, following elections to the State Duma in Russia's newly claimed territories, the EU had "exploded" with open threats to impose sanctions on those involved in organising the elections or running as candidates there.

"For the seven and a half years that /Ukrainian President Volodymyr/ Zelensky has been in power, not a single referendum has been held in Ukraine," Miroshnik said.

He recalled that during the 2019 election campaign, Zelensky promised that the first law he would sign as president would be a Law on Democracy, and that afterward all strategic issues concerning the lives of the population would be decided through referendums.
