MACRON AND CARNEY SEEK CLOSER ECONOMIC TIES

PARIS, SEPTEMBER 20 /SRNA/ – French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met today to discuss deepening economic and security ties in the remote North Atlantic archipelago of Saint Pierre and Miquelon.

The meeting came several days after Carney welcomed the possibility of Canada becoming the European Union's first associate member, saying closer ties with Europe would help ensure that no single country could control Canadian markets or undermine its sovereignty.

Macron welcomed Carney at the airport in the French territory off the coast of Newfoundland.

"This is an important moment," Macron said upon arriving in Saint Pierre and Miquelon, which has a population of about 5,800.

The French president said the talks would provide an opportunity to strengthen bilateral economic ties and defense cooperation, AP reported.

Macron added that the meeting was part of broader efforts to help France secure oil and gas supplies as the war in Iran disrupts global energy markets.

Carney's office said the two leaders would discuss deepening the Canada-France partnership in strategic sectors, including aerospace, energy, critical minerals and advanced technologies such as quantum computing, satellites and supercomputing.
