ISLAMIC STATE REMAINS A SERIOUS THREAT TO INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

NEW YORK, AUGUST 5 /SRNA/ - The Islamic State terrorist organisation continues to pose a serious threat to international peace and security despite ongoing efforts to combat it, Oguljeren Niyazberdiyeva, Chief of Staff to the United Nations Under-Secretary-General, said.

"Despite international efforts, Islamic State continues to pose a serious threat to international peace and security. Although ongoing counterterrorism operations have disrupted the group's senior leadership and reduced its ability to centrally direct its operations, it has continued to adapt," Niyazberdiyeva told a meeting of the UN Security Council, TASS reported.

She stressed that, despite Islamic State's weakened command structure, the extremist organisation remains resilient, with its affiliates united by a common ideology.

"Islamic State continues to exploit fragile security environments and protracted armed conflicts to carry out operations, reorganise and gather resources," Niyazberdiyeva said.

She concluded that the terrorist organisation's ability to constantly adapt to changing circumstances requires continued international cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
