COPENHAGEN, OCTOBER 5 /SRNA/ - broke into Denmark’s national register and gained access to the personal data of 8.8 million people, the Ministry of Digital Affairs said.
The ministry said that hackers "gained unauthorized access to names, addresses and social security numbers," including those of people who have died or emigrated, AFP reported.
"This is an extremely serious incident. We are mapping the full scope of the incident together with all relevant authorities," Digital Affairs Minister Christina Egelund said.
Denmark has a population of around six million, but the national register contains information on 11 million people, including data on deceased people and those who have moved out of the country.
The ministry's statement added that an investigation into the incident had been launched, while the hackers have not yet been identified.
