GUTERRES: WORLD MUST NOT FORGET VICTIMS OF NAGASAKI ATOMIC BOMBING

NEW YORK, AUGUST 9 /SRNA/ - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated he firmly believes that the world must remember the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, its victims and survivors.

"Eighty-one years ago, Nagasaki became a symbol of humanity's capacity for destruction. Today, it also stands as both a warning and a guide," Guterres posted on X.

He added that the event calls on humanity to build a world in which peace is maintained not through fear, but through a shared purpose.

The United States dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, three days after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

By the end of that year, 70,000 people had died as a result of the bombing in Nagasaki, while 140,000 died in Hiroshima.

Japan surrendered on August 15, 1945, bringing an end to the Second World War and to Japan's nearly five decades of aggression across Asia.
