PARIS, NOVEMBER 7 /SRNA/ - A seven-year-old girl from BiH was killed when a school bus overturned in the village of Lent, near the city of Bourg-en-Bresse, the Ground News portal reported.

An 18-year-old man was also killed in the accident, and the prosecutor's office said today that the school bus driver told police he had fallen asleep at the wheel.

"When he woke up, he was on the opposite side of the road," prosecutor Karin Malara told a news conference.

Four people were seriously injured, two of them in critical condition. Another 25 people sustained minor injuries. The 26-year-old driver was among those injured and has been detained.

The prosecutor said that alcohol and drug tests came back negative and that an investigation had been launched on suspicion of manslaughter and causing bodily injury in a traffic accident.

The driver said he had left for work early and had already completed one trip.

The bus hit several trees before coming to a stop in a ditch beside the road in Lent, a small town near Lyon.

Forty-nine people were on board, including 23 minors, DPA reported.

More than 100 firefighters and 50 police officers were deployed at the scene, and the road where the accident occurred has been closed.

French President Emmanuel Macron described the accident as horrific, saying that his thoughts were with the victims' families.
