ATHENS, AUGUST 17 /SRNA/ - The wildfire front in Peristeri, on the Greek island of Salamina near Athens, has been stabilized, but firefighters remain on alert due to the risk of the blaze flaring up again, Greek media reported today.
Greek news portal Kathimerini reported yesterday that at least two people had been killed in the fire, 10 injured, and 502 people evacuated from the coastal areas of Saterli and Kolones.
Buildings in Peristeri suffered extensive damage, while in some cases the fire left behind only charred remains of structures, making it difficult even to determine whether they were residential or commercial premises.
Vehicles parked near the buildings also sustained significant damage.
