DEATH TOLL EXCEEDS 1,000

KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 1 /SRNA/ - The death toll from catastrophic floods in Nepal and China has surpassed 1,000, authorities said, according to the Daily Mail.

Nepal’s disaster management agency said 987 deaths had been recorded in the country, while 3,916 people were reported missing, including 583 foreign nationals.

Chinese authorities reported 16 deaths in their latest update.

The disaster occurred on Wednesday, August 26, and began with a series of events high in the Himalayas.

The collapse of a glacier triggered a massive slide of rock, ice, and water into the valleys below, causing severe flooding and landslides downstream.

Scientists studying satellite imagery said that the initial collapse and landslide occurred in the Himalayan region.

The rockslide was powerful enough to be detected as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake on the Richter scale.
