BRATISLAVA, OCTOBER 26 /SRNA/ - Slovakia considers the use of frozen Russian assets to finance the Ukrainian army unacceptable, Slovak Deputy Speaker of Parliament Tibor Gašpar said.
"When it comes to frozen Russian assets, Slovakia has stressed the need for a thorough legal assessment, prudence and consideration of the long-term consequences of decisions taken. This approach of confrontation and confiscation is unacceptable," Gašpar said in an interview with TASS.
He recalled that Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico had previously rejected a proposal to confiscate frozen Russian assets and use them to finance Ukraine’s military needs.
"Fico pointed to possible legal proceedings, the risk of retaliatory measures and the consequences such a move could have for future peace negotiations," Gašpar said.
According to him, financial support for Ukraine will be considered only after hostilities have ended, and then for the purpose of rebuilding civilian infrastructure and establishing lasting peace.
"Slovakia is interested in ensuring that every decision in this area has a clear legal basis, complies with international obligations and reduces the risk of further deterioration in international relations," Gašpar concluded.
