INFANTINO TO REMAIN FIFA PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE

GENEVA, SEPTEMBER 6 /SRNA-Reuters/ — FIFA President Gianni Infantino will seek re-election despite opposition to his bid following the failure of a plan to privatize part of FIFA's competitions, a FIFA spokesperson said.

"FIFA's president announced in April that he would apply for election re-run in 2027. Of course, nothing has changed. Mr Infantino will run for re-election," the spokesperson said in a statement.

Infantino faced calls to resign after his plan to sell a 20 per cent stake in the World Cup and other competitions was rejected in July.

Infantino continues to have the support of the African and South American football confederations.

The statement came after Infantino declined to answer when asked whether he regretted the turmoil of the past six weeks, while attending the Under-20 World Cup in Poland yesterday.
