FOČA, MARCH 6 /SRNA/ – The coordinator for intensive medicine in Republika Srpska, Peđa Kovačević, has stated today in Foča, where the Intensive Care Unit for non-surgical branches was opened, that there are very few such organisational units in countries of the Eastern European bloc, while Republika Srpska now has three, which represents a major step forward for the healthcare system.

"Apart from Republika Srpska, the Western Balkans have not got a single country that has this type of intensive care unit profile, nor this approach to increasing the number of beds for treating critically ill patients. Even the countries that are part of the Eastern European bloc have very few such organisational units - so you can understand what kind of progress we have made," emphasized Kovačević, who is also the head of the Clinic for Non-Surgical Branches at the Republika Srpska University Clinical Centre in Banja Luka.

The head of the new unit at the Foča hospital, Svjetlana Subotić, recalled that the project began two years ago, when during the COVID-19 pandemic the need for such a multidisciplinary organisational unit became evident.

"We will treat all critically ill patients from internal medicine branches, such as severe heart attacks and strokes, as well as all patients who require support due to the failure of one of the vital organs," Subotić explained.

Specialists in internal medicine, pulmonology, cardiology and anesthesiology will work at the unit.
