PALE, AUGUST 30 /SRNA/ - The Sarajevo-Pale narrow-gauge railway, once a symbol of connectivity and development, wound through hilly terrain, transporting passengers, goods, and stories from one end to the other, and today, decades after the "ćiro" trains fell silent, the old route is getting new life and is being transformed into a bicycle path.
A bicycle path that is being prepared, approximately 15 kilometers long, from Pale to Kozja Ćuprija, will connect communities, promote tourism, and preserve the memory of an important chapter in the past.
This is a joint project of the cities of East Sarajevo and Sarajevo, and the municipalities of East Sarajevo, Pale and Sarajevo Old Town, with significant support from the EU. The construction of the bicycle path, which is nearing completion, included the rehabilitation of nine tunnels, two bridges, one bypass, and the installation of traffic signals and protective fences.
This project brings expansive views, safe sections and a comfortable route designed for all cycling enthusiasts, from hard-working athletes to relaxed recreationalists.
The ride will lead through lush landscapes alongside clear streams and over bridges, offering tourists unforgettable views and peaceful moments.
The new bicycle path, which follows the Paljanska Miljacka riverbed, is not only a functional connection between cities, but also an attractive tourist attraction that will revive sleepy corners and breathe new energy into the entire area.
PRERAST - STONE BRIDGE IN THE PALJANSKA MILJACKA CANYON
Not far from the former Pale railway station, through tunnels and along the railway route, two kilometers away, there is Prerast - a stone bridge in the Paljanska Miljacka canyon and represents a rock arch, which was formed by the influence of wind and water.
This stone bridge, in addition to its touristic value, also has historical significance, as there is a painting by the unknown author of this natural phenomenon from 1785.
The most beautiful part of the Miljacka River, apart from its source, is the canyon that stretches from Pale Station to Dovlići, where the Mokranjska and Paljanska Miljacka rivers meet, parallel to the former route of the Sarajevo-Pale narrow-gauge railway.
All visitors will be able to see the old devastated Dovlići railway station hidden among the greenery, a small but significant witness to the time when trains connected Sarajevo and Pale.
Although now without the sound of a locomotive, the station preserves the spirit of past journeys and becomes an interesting point on the future cycling path.
