ISTOČNO SARAJEVO, DECEMBER 14 /SRNA/ – Tonight, an exhibition of works by students of the Iconography School at the Orthodox Youth Centre of the Dabar-Bosnia Metropolitanate "Saint Peter of Sarajevo" was opened at the Cultural Centre Istočno Novo Sarajevo, to mark the 850th anniversary of the birth of Saint Sava.

Goran Janićijević, lecturer at the Iconography School, said that the exhibition consists of 35 works and represents the result of a year-long effort and spiritual reflection of the students.

He noted that the exhibition was created as an artistic response to the great Saint Sava jubilee and that the works are thematically focused on the life and deeds of Saint Sava, as well as on the broader Saint Sava heritage that has permeated Serbian church art throughout the centuries.

“Through iconography, we have sought to illuminate the depth of this spiritual tradition and its relevance today,” Janićijević told the press.

According to him, the displayed works are inspired by examples of medieval Serbian frescoes in Studenica, Mileševa, Gračanica, and the Church of the Virgin Ljeviška, as well as by works of Byzantine and post-Byzantine masters.

He added that the exhibition includes several thematic sections relating to the iconographic representation of Saint Sava, his spiritual pursuits, and the historical context of his work, as well as the influence of the work Varlaam and Joasaf on the formation of Saint Sava’s orientation toward the Heavenly Kingdom.

The exhibition opening was also attended by Istočno Sarajevo Mayor, Ljubiša Ćosić, to whom the school leaders expressed gratitude for his significant contribution and support for the school’s work.
