BANJA LUKA, JANUARY 8 /SRNA/ – The city of Banja Luka has been decorated with the flags of Republika Srpska and Serbia, enhancing the atmosphere ahead of January 9 - Republika Srpska Day.

January 9 is celebrated as the Day of Republika Srpska, which was originally established on this date in 1992 under the name Republic of the Serb People in BiH.

Republika Srpska was founded by Serb deputies in the then Assembly of BiH after being outvoted on key decisions regarding the survival of Yugoslavia, while representatives of the other two peoples proceeded with secession against the will of the Serbs, who held constituent status.

The name Republic of the Serb people in BiH remained in use until February 28, 1992, when the first Constitution was adopted and the entity was renamed Serb Republic BiH. This name was used until August 12, 1992, when it was changed to Serb Republic. In September 1992, it was replaced with its current name - Republika Srpska.
