ROME, JUNE 4 /SRNA/ - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy Antonio Tajani has expressed his condolences and condemnation after a Serbian peacekeeper from the UNIFIL mission died from injuries sustained following an attack in Lebanon.

"I extend my most sincere condolences to the UNIFIL contingent and the authorities in Belgrade on the death of a Serbian soldier that occurred last night in Lebanon following an attack on the contingent's base," Tajani wrote on X.

He stressed that "UNIFIL military personnel are professional and dedicated to ensuring peace and providing assistance to local communities in war-torn territory" and that "their safety must always be guaranteed".

"We condemn all forms of violence and call on all parties to ensure the safety of UN personnel and facilities," Tajani stressed.

Two other UN peacekeepers, from Spain and El Salvador, were injured in a mortar attack that hit his position near Marjayoun, in southeastern Lebanon.

More than 1,000 Italian soldiers are participating in the UNIFIL mission.
