PETAR KONJOVIĆ DREW INSPIRATION FROM FOLK MELOS

BIJELJINA, MAY 4 /SRNA/ – Serbian classical composer Petar Konjović /1883–1970/, rector of the Music Academy in Belgrade, a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts /SANU/ and director of the SANU Institute of Musicology, was born on May 5, 1883.

Konjović drew inspiration from folk melos and, through his strong musical individuality, helped solidify the national direction in Serbian music.

His works include the operas "Prince of Zeta," "The Fairy's Veil," "Koštana," and "Peasants," collections of solo songs "My Country" and "Lyrics," as well as the books "Stevan Mokranjac," "Miloje Milojević," and "The Book of Music".

In 1946, he was elected a full member of SANU, and he headed the SANU Institute of Musicology from 1948 to 1954.

He received Serbia's July 7 Award for lifetime achievement in 1960.

Konjović was born in Čurug on May 5, 1883, and died in Belgrade on October 1, 1970.
