BELGRADE, JANUARY 19 /SRNA/ - Twenty-one-year-old economics student from Belgrade, Maša Petković, was the first among 400 swimmers to reach the Holy Cross in Zemun.
The dominant winner of the Zemun race for the Holy Cross, which traditionally gathers the largest number of swimmers in the Serbian capital, sent a message to young people to believe in themselves, as they are often unaware of how great their strength is.
A total of 30 women took part in the Epiphany swimming competition for the Holy Cross.
Among the swimmers who on this day showed great respect for the Orthodox faith were 12 Greeks, three Armenians, and one Georgian.
Before entering the water, they prayed to God and then sang the traditional song about the Serbian cradle - Kosovo and Metohija, "Hriste Bože," including the verse, "Farewell, first unborn son...".
In Belgrade, swimming for the Holy Cross is held at several locations.
Today, the Serbian Orthodox Church and believers are marking Epiphany, the feast commemorating the baptism of Jesus Christ in the River Jordan.
Epiphany is one of the greatest Christian holidays, as it is believed that at the moment of Christ's baptism, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit appeared together for the first time, thus revealing the mystery of the Holy Trinity, which became a symbol of faith.
