BELGRADE, AUGUST 20 /SRNA/ - General Ratko Mladić is in the weakest condition he has ever been in and was unable to utter a single word during our visit, the general's son Darko Mladić told SRNA after visiting General Mladić with his mother.
"It was a difficult visit. We were with him for a little more than four and a half hours. He did not have the strength to say a single word and slept through most of the visit," Darko Mladić said.
Darko Mladić confirmed that the general will be examined tomorrow by a cardiologist from Serbia, to whom, it is expected, The Hague will hand over his medical records.
"We could not learn anything new today; we will see what the doctor says tomorrow," Darko Mladić said.
He said that the family and legal representatives had submitted a new request to the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, this time asking that he at least be allowed to serve his sentence in Serbia if he is not to be released on humanitarian grounds, because, as he pointed out, General Mladić cannot remain in the detention unit in any case, but must be hospitalized.
General Mladić has been in a detention hospital in The Hague since 2024, where he is receiving palliative care.
The Mechanism has repeatedly rejected requests for his temporary release to receive medical treatment in Serbia.
