ST. PETERSBURG, SEPTEMBER 4 /SRNA - RIA Novosti/ - The West views the former Soviet states as a buffer zone that is crucial to inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia and China, Russian Foreign Intelligence Service /SVR/ Director Sergei Naryshkin said.

"As for the post-Soviet space as a whole, Western intelligence documents describe it primarily as an arena of confrontation between the West and new centers of power.

In other words, Europeans deny the countries of the region genuine geopolitical subjectivity, seeing in them essentially a buffer zone, control over which would allow them to inflict a strategic defeat on their existential opponents – Russia and China," Naryshkin said at a meeting of security and intelligence chiefs of the Commonwealth of Independent States near St. Petersburg.

Naryshkin noted that the old world order in the form of a "United Europe" does not want to yield to multipolarity in the form of the Eurasian Economic Union, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and Commonwealth of Independent States.

"Instead of focusing efforts on solving internal problems, such as economic stagnation, deindustrialization, energy and migration crises and excessive dependence on the United States for defense and policymaking, European leaders have opted for deeper relations with sovereign Eurasian powers," he concluded.
