WASHINGTON IMPOSES SANCTIONS ON INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT’S PRESIDENT

WASHINGTON, AUGUST 18 /SRNA – Reuters/ – The United States has imposed sanctions on International Criminal Court President Tomoko Akane, according to the website of the US Department of Treasury.

The US sanctions against the Japanese judge are a continuation of a trend that began last year, when the USA imposed targeted sanctions on several Court officials, including prosecutors and judges, citing the Court’s arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, as well as its earlier investigation into US operations in Afghanistan.

The sanctions freeze any assets held by the targeted individuals in the United States and prevent them from accessing the US financial system.

The administration of President Donald Trump has further strained relations with the Court, based in The Hague, questioning the legitimacy and validity of decisions made by the international body.

The United States is not a member of the Court.
