U.S. NATIONAL DEBT SURPASSES USD 40 TRILLION

WASHINGTON, AUGUST 20 /SRNA/ - The national debt of the United States has surpassed USD 40 trillion, according to the latest data from the US Treasury Department.

The debt reached USD 40.047 trillion on Tuesday, of which USD 32.266 trillion is debt held by investors and other holders of US government securities, while USD 7.782 trillion represents intragovernmental debt, Reuters reported.

US national debt has more than doubled in less than a decade.
