TYPHOON HITS CHINA, MORE THAN 1 MILLION EVACUATED

BEIJING, AUGUST 9 /SRNA/ - More than one million people have been evacuated and more than 1,500 flights cancelled after Typhoon Delfin made landfall on China's eastern coast, authorities said.

Maximum wind speeds near the center of the storm exceeded 150 kilometers per hour when the typhoon made landfall.

Between 250 and 500 millimeters of rain is expected in parts of central and eastern Zhejiang Province.

Authorities relocated more than 900,000 residents from the city of Wenzhou and opened more than 1,000 emergency shelters.

Nearly 1,400 flights at two major passenger airports in Shanghai were cancelled during the day, state television reported.

Hangzhou Airport in neighboring Zhejiang Province cancelled 270 arriving and departing flights, according to the report.
