WASHINGTON, AUGUST 3 /SRNA/ - Thousands of people have been ordered to evacuate parts of the city of Spokane in the eastern US state of Washington as firefighters battle several wildfires.
Authorities issued an evacuation warning and urged residents to leave the affected areas immediately, DPA reported.
Local authorities said that the fire near Spokane is advancing rapidly, having already burned several thousand hectares of land, destroyed numerous homes and forced hundreds of people to evacuate.
Three fires in the Spokane area, fuelled by dangerous winds, have affected more than 7,700 hectares.
At least 600 structures, including homes, have so far been destroyed or damaged, while around 4,000 structures remain at risk.
Washington Governor Bob Ferguson said on Facebook that he had spoken with US President Donald Trump about the difficult and dangerous situation in Spokane and across the state, and that they would work together on further requests for federal assistance.
The National Weather Service warned of the risk of new wildfires.
According to US Census estimates, Spokane, located near the border with Idaho, had nearly 231,000 residents in 2025.
