TANKER CAPTAINS PAID UP TO $100,000 A MONTH

LONDON, OCTOBER 7 /SRNA/ - Captains of oil tankers sailing through the Strait of Hormuz are being paid as much as $100,000 a month, with additional bonuses of up to $50,000 for each transit, the Financial Times reported.

Citing sources, the newspaper said companies were offering captains hazard pay in an effort to keep ships moving through the Strait of Hormuz.

"Ordinary seafarers are receiving payments four to six times higher for each passage through the Strait of Hormuz. The cost of moving a tanker through Hormuz has reached a record $1.3 million a day," the newspaper reported.

Before the crisis, the rate was around $20,000 to $50,000 a day.

Ships are passing through the strait at night with their GPS switched off.
