SWARM OF JELLYFISH BLOCKS NUCLEAR REACTOR

PARIS, AUGUST 12 /SRNA/ - A swarm of jellyfish has led to the blockage of pumps and the shutdown of reactors at the "Gravelines" nuclear power plant in northern France, the largest atomic power station in Western Europe, the energy group EDF announced.

Currently, only one of the six reactors at the plant is operating at full capacity, after the marine creatures disrupted the operation of the cooling units.

Footage from the scene shows groups of bright blue jellyfish in the waters around the atomic power plant. EDF stated that "several tens of tons" of jellyfish have accumulated near the facility.

Three of the six 900-megawatt reactors have been completely shut down, while the output of the fourth has been reduced by half. Another is shut down for maintenance, so only one remains in operation, "The Independent" reports.
