SHOIGU SADDENED BY NEWS OF GENERAL MLADIĆ'S DEATH

MOSCOW, AUGUST 28 /SRNA/ - Sergei Shoigu, Secretary of Russia’s Security Council, expressed his deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ratko Mladić, the former Chief of the Main Staff of the Republika Srpska Army, saying that he was saddened by the news of the general’s death.

“I was saddened to learn of General Mladić’s death in prison in The Hague. The unjust verdict handed down against Ratko Mladić by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, as well as the inhumane conditions of his detention, are a clear example of disregard for international law and the principles of fair and humane treatment of prisoners,” Shoigu said.

In a condolence message published by Russia’s Security Council, Shoigu expressed his deepest condolences to the general’s son, Darko Mladić, the family and friends of the deceased.

Mladić died yesterday at a detention hospital in The Hague after repeated requests by his family and lawyers for him to be temporarily released to receive medical treatment in Serbia were denied.
