SCHOMANN CALLS ON MERTZ TO STEP DOWN

BERLIN, SEPTEMBER 8 /SRNA/ - Tino Schomann, deputy leader of the Christian Democratic Union /CDU/ in the German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, called on Chancellor Friedrich Merz to resign today.

Schomann said that the Alternative for Germany /AfD/ party’s sweeping victory in the state of Saxony-Anhalt “indicates that Merz is not up to the task.”

“He is not suited to a position that requires someone to unite the country and solve its problems,” Schomann stressed, according to the British daily The Telegraph.

The AfD won 44 percent of the vote in the election in the eastern German state, while the CDU received 17 percent.

After the defeat, Merz said he was upset and described it as the CDU’s biggest debacle in several decades.

Schomann is the first senior CDU politician to call on Merz to resign.
