RIBERA: WOMAN SHOULD BE NEXT HEAD OF WORLD ORGANIZATION

BRUSSELS, SEPTEMBER 23 /SRNA/ - For the first time in history, a woman should become the next UN Secretary-General, European Commission Vice-President Teresa Ribera said.

Four women are among the seven candidates who are expected to replace António Guterres when his term expires at the end of December.

His successor is expected to take office on January 1, 2027.

The candidates are Costa Rica’s Rebeca Grynspan, Guyana’s Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, and Ecuador’s Ivone Baki and María Fernanda Espinosa.

The other leading candidates for the post of UN Secretary-General are Rafael Grossi of Argentina, Macky Sall of Senegal, and Olara Otunnu of Uganda.

The previous nine UN secretaries-general were men.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez recently expressed a similar view to Ribera, saying that “after 80 years of the multilateral order, it would be fair for a woman to take up the post of UN secretary-general.”
