RESCUERS SAVE CHINESE WORKER FROM FLOOD-DAMAGED POWER PLANT

KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 5 /SRNA/ — Rescue workers in Nepal have pulled a Chinese man alive from a hydropower plant destroyed by severe flooding, the office of the Nepalese prime minister said in a statement.

The rescue brings the number of people saved from the Trishuli hydropower plant to three. Two Nepalese workers were rescued on Friday.

The Nepalese Army said the man was pulled alive from a 225-meter-long tunnel and that his condition was currently being assessed.

Footage showed him being evacuated by helicopter, with a military doctor examining him during the flight, the Associated Press reported.

Around 900 workers are reported missing from 12 hydropower plants across Nepal, while authorities said earlier that around 500 people were believed to be trapped in various tunnels.

According to the latest official figures, 1,344 people died in the floods on August 26, which were caused by a glacier collapse, while more than 5,000 people remain missing.
